Private-Party Sales Lead Used-Car Surge
Private-party sales showed the greatest increase, franchised dealers increased used sales by more than 3 percent and independents saw their used sales fall 6.6 percent.
That's the word from CNW Research, which said Tuesday that, overall, August used-vehicle sales reached 3.87 million units for a 1.5-percent year-over-year uptick.
Breaking it down, franchised dealers moved 1.48 million used vehicles (up 3.3 percent), while independent dealers sold 1.33 million vehicles, compared to 1.42 million in the same period a year ago.
Private-party sales climbed from 957,086 units to 1.06 million.
Sharing some other used-car sales statistics from the month, CNW pointed out that more than half of used sales (52 percent) were passenger cars, while trucks commanded a 48-percent share.
There were roughly 10.8 million used-vehicle shoppers in August, the firm added.
Interestingly enough, the proportion of shoppers using a mobile device to locate a used vehicle climbed from 11 percent in August 2011 to roughly 29 percent in the most recent month.
